Premium vs. Regular Gas

Plenty of drivers across Barrington and Itasca find themselves pondering the difference between premium and regular gas, especially when they’re driving a high-end model fromAlfa Romeo. In fact, some vehicles are designed to run on premium gas instead of regular, and using the right one will keep yours running in prime condition and at its full potential. That’s why we’ve put together this premium vs. regular gas guide to help you decide which is best.

Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

The biggest difference between premium and regular gas is the octane level. This measures your fuel’s ability to resist “knocking” or “pinging” during the combustion process. Since premium gas has a higher octane level, there is a greater likelihood of engine combustion (sometimes referred to as “pre-ignition” or “engine knock”). You’ll generally find high-performance vehicles utilizing premium gas with an octane level of 91. Regular or unleaded usually has an octane level of 87.

Do you notice engine knock on a regular basis? You might be using the wrong type of fuel. Check your owner’s manual or speak to one of our service technicians to make sure you’re filling the gas tank with the appropriate fuel.

Should You Choose Premium Gasoline or Regular?

Premium gas is better for your engine, but that doesn’t mean you’ll reap the full benefit. Check with your owner’s manual to see what the manufacturer recommends. Vehicles designed for high performance or workhorse capability usually require more advanced gas to deliver their added horsepower and torque, but your everyday vehicle probably won’t notice much of a difference. If the manual says regular gas is fine, you might as well keep saving money by using it instead of premium.
